Pipe insulation prevents sprayer hang ups. When you have to ‘jiggle’ the hose when you pull it out of the kitchen sink sprayer, the hose is more than likely catching on the shutoff valve or pipes under the sink. Slip a ½ inch foam pipe insulation over the pipes and shutoff handles.
You can fill the space between two stainless steel sink basins with expanding foam to quiet vibrations. This is more easily done before the sink installation but can be done afterwards. Be sure to let the foam harden and then trim away any excess with a knife.
Running hot water can cause copper pipes to expand and grind against pipe hangers and joints. You can use adhesive-backed felt to wrap pipes to silence the creaking noise by first removing the hangers and then cutting the felt into strips. Adhere the strips of felt to the pipe and then refasten the hangers.
If you drop a hard object such as a toy, toothbrush, etc. in the toilet you want to use a wet/dry shop vacuum to suck out the water and obstruction. If you use a plunger this could push the object deeper into the plumbing.
A leaking pipe is harder to spot because these are out of sight or behind walls, but there are clues to look for such as musty smells or discolored water. Peeling paint may also be an indicator of a leaking pipe. If you spot mold or mildew, there could be a serious problem that requires professional attention to avoid costly water damage to your home or office.
If you are in the midst of a plumbing project and have your water supply turned off, be sure to keep 2-gallon buckets of water near your toilets. This way you can still flush the toilet when you need to use it. Simply pour water into the toilet bowl before using it. This will give you one flush per bucket.
